CPCIC 2016 Held in Shanghai

The 2016 China Petroleum & Chemical International Conference (CPCIC) was held in Shanghai on September 12 - 14. Organizers set this year’s theme as “New Normal, New Drivers, New Competiveness” to address the situation facing the petrochemical industry today.

Industry leaders from more than 50 countries and regions attended the conference to discuss the new drivers for sustainable development. The New Normal requires China’s petrochemical industry to shift from its original factor - and capital-driven development models towards new ideas, new path and new drivers for sustainable development under the umbrella of supply-side reform. The industry shall seek deeper and higher-level cooperation with the world economy, in line with the theme of the G-20 Hangzhou Summit that ended on September 6.

China’s petrochemical industry is in the spotlight as global economic growth slows amid increasing uncertainties in the road ahead.

The domestic petrochemical industry is at a critical stage in its transformation from a big industry to a strong one in the five-year period (2016-2020). Companies need to do more market research, improve supply and create demand. Also, the government’s “One Road and One Belt” initiative is providing a wonderful opportunity for Chinese petrochemical companies to adjust industrial structure, resolve excess capacity and beef up international cooperation. Meanwhile, the government’s supply-side reform is set to create new economic drivers in emerging and innovative industries, in particular in such areas like specialty chemicals, high-end manufacturing and differentiated development.

CPCIC 2016 was followed by the China International Chemical Industry Fair (ICIF China 2016), to be held on September 21-23. This year’s theme of ICIF is “SmartChem – Innovation Creates Future.” The ICIF China 2016 – SmartChem – Chemical E-commerce Conference will also be held on the sidelines of the ICIF. Companies joining the event include CNPC, Sinopec, Sinochem, ChemChina, Yanchang Petroleum, Shanghai Huayi and Luxi Chemical, as well as multinationals such as Covestro, Evonik Degussa, LANXESS, Linde, Wacker Chemie, Cabot, Celanese, Eastman Chemical, Air Liquide, Arkema, Clariant, Borealis and SABIC.
